Fish Cutlet/ Fish Fritters

Fritters or cutlet are a great dish for any party appetizers. The most common cutlets are the chicken cutlet, pork cutlet, beef cutlet and vegetable cutlet. You can make cutlets with a wide range of ingredients. Cutlets are a fun lunch box meal for your kids with fresh vegies or even turn them into a sandwich. Fish cutlets too are super easy and utterly delicious appetizers. This dish is not only delicious but also highly nutritious.

Preparation Methods

You can cook these cutlet by shallow frying them in oil, air frying, baking in oven or even deep frying them

  • 3 to 4 minutes per side to pan-fry the average fillet

  • Bake in preheated oven for about 5 to 7 minutes. Turn each cutlet over and bake for a further 5 to 7 minutes

  • Cook in the air fryer at 200°C (390°F) for 12 to 15 minutes, flipping halfway through at 8 to 10 minutes

  • Heat oil until hot. Gently place the cutlets in hot oil and fry them till golden for 4 to 5 minutes



Surmai Fish Cutlet/ Mackerel Fish Fritters

These fish cutlets are very easy to prepare and can be done within minutes. The only prep work that is needed is to boil and mash the potatoes, steam and shred the fish filets. If you cannot get fish filets, steam the fish and remove the skin and the bones. Shred them and set aside.

Serve: 8 Prep Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 10 mins Total Time: 25 mins

Ingredients:

2 medium fresh Mackerels, or any other firm fish like canned tuna, salmon, kingfish etc

1/2 cup Red Onions (finely chopped)

1 tbsp Ginger Garlic Paste

1/2 tsp Red Chili Powder

1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder

1 large Egg

1/4 tsp Black Pepper Powder

1 tbsp Vinegar

2-3 tbsp Finely Chopped Cilantro/ Coriander Leaves

1/2 cup Bread crumbs/ Semolina, add as required

Salt to taste


Garnish:

Lemon Juice

Ketchup (optional)


Let's get cooking

1. Clean the fish properly and cut in filet, steam and debone it.


2. Transfer the flesh in a mixing bowl, add chopped onions, ginger garlic paste, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, black pepper powder, vinegar, and egg yolk.


3. Mix everything well. Take some mixture, and try to form cutlet, or any shape as you desire. If they hold their shape, continue with the crumb coating, if not, dip 1-2 slices of bread in water, squeeze the water out, and add this bread to the mixture, mix well.


4. Beat the egg white in a bowl with little salt. Place breadcrumbs/semolina in another bowl, season with little salt. Now dip the cutlet in egg white and then breadcrumbs. Coat all the cutlet in this manner.


5. Heat oil on medium heat in a skillet, fry the cutlet until they are golden brown from all sides, turning sides as required.


Serve hot with lemon slices and a mayo -tomato sauce dip which pairs really well. You can also try the Mint-Yoghurt chutney which will give you additional flavor.
